A Heritage grain, it is a descendant of Western Ukrainian wheat, Halychanka. From the mid-1800s until the early 1900s, Red Fife was the dominant wheat variety grown in Canada, prized for its hardiness, rust resistance, yield, milling and baking qualities. It was first grown in Canada in 1842 by a farmer in Peterborough County, who had been sent Halychanka seed from a friend in Scotland. Named “Red” for its color when fully ripe and “Fife” after David Fife, the farmer who first grew it, Red Fife was widely grown in Canada and the northern states until it started to be replaced by Marquis, which is a descendant of Red Fife. In 1988, the cultivation of this remarkable grain was revived by the Heritage Wheat Project and today is making a comeback within the artisan bakers’ community. Red Fife is grown in the Peace River Country by Peace Country Milling.
